About the Organisation
We are a newly established private NPO operating at the frontier of translational research and precision care.
We believe that advances in technology, genomics, data science, and machine learning will transform how we treat patients, empower individuals to take greater control of their health, and unlock healthier living for all. Our mission is to support the discovery of novel care pathways that intervene before patients become sick, shifting the paradigm from reactive treatment to proactive, evidence-based prevention.
We partner with the world's leading hospitals, physician-scientists, and researchers to explore and apply new approaches to tackling health challenges that go beyond diseases, disciplines, and datasets.
About the Role
We are a small, agile team, and we are looking for someone who will thrive in that environment: entrepreneurial, resourceful, and comfortable creating their own path rather than stepping into a role that is already fully mapped out.
This is a newly created position within a new organisation, where you will have the ability to define how it works, build the processes it runs on, and shape it into the function the organisation needs. It will suit someone who sees that ambiguity as the opportunity, not the obstacle.
The Legal & Tax Manager will serve as the central point of coordination for legal and tax matters across the organisation's activities and its associated entities and investments.
Our work is growing in scale and complexity, spanning multiple jurisdictions, and is often cross-border, involving a range of structures. This is a generalist role, and its defining feature is breadth. In any given week you might be coordinating a cross-border tax question, reviewing a matter concerning donation agreements, operating arrangements, or considering the implications of an investment.
Rather than producing formal legal opinions yourself, your focus will be to identify the issues at stake, instruct and manage the right external advisers across the relevant jurisdictions, critically assess the advice that comes back, and translate it into clear, practical guidance for the organisation.
Over time, and as you build familiarity with the organisation, we would expect you to identify risks and gaps, anticipate the organisation's needs, form and hold preliminary views of your own and identify the right external counsel for confirmation if needed.
Equally central is the task of building the organisation's institutional legal memory. You will establish a structured, reliable process for capturing this knowledge and applying it, so that when a familiar question recurs, we can draw on what we already know rather than answering it from scratch.
This is a role with genuine ownership and room to grow: for the right person, it offers a path to leading the NPO's legal function as the organisation matures.
Key Responsibilities
Legal Coordination & Triage
- Act as the central intake and triage point for legal and tax matters arising across the NPO's operations.
- For each matter, determine whether it can be resolved from existing internal knowledge, requires external advice, or can be addressed through your own view ahead of targeted external confirmation.
- Ensure that recurring or analogous matters are recognised as such, with the relevant precedents, positions, and watch-points surfaced consistently.
- Over time, identify risks and gaps, and anticipate the organisation's legal/tax needs.
External Adviser Management
- Identify and instruct the appropriate external law firms and tax specialists across the relevant jurisdictions, scoping each instruction carefully and controlling cost.
- Manage new and existing external adviser relationships.
- Critically review and pressure-test external advice, assessing its quality, identifying gaps, and reconciling conflicting positions, rather than accepting it at face value.
- Synthesise legal and tax advice into clear, practical guidance for directors and senior stakeholders, flagging risks and required actions.
Knowledge & Process
- Design, build, and maintain the internal legal knowledge function: capturing existing knowledge from senior colleagues, indexing past advice and positions, and establishing the process by which future matters are logged and made retrievable.
- Develop consistent, well-documented processes for how legal and tax questions are raised, handled, and recorded across the organisation.
- Support the directors and administrators on the legal and tax aspects of ongoing operations as required.
Organisational Contribution
- Contribute to the NPO's wider strategic development.
- Support the recruitment and development of more junior staff as the team grows.
About You
Experience & Skills
- A qualified lawyer, or a chartered tax adviser (CTA) or STEP member with strong legal grounding, with roughly 5–10 years of post-qualification experience.
- A generalist energised by variety across entity types, jurisdictions, and areas of law.
- Strong technical judgement: you can read an external opinion and distinguish sound advice from weak advice, spot what has been left unaddressed, and know when a question needs to be sent out and to whom.
- Experience instructing and managing external advisers, ideally across jurisdictions and entity types.
- Exposure to relevant subject matter is preferred, e.g., trusts and fiduciary structures, charitable foundations, cross-border tax, investments.
- Prior experience in a trust company, fiduciary or family-office setting, a fund or in-house legal team would likely be relevant.
- Candidates earlier in their careers who are ready to step up to the challenge and grow into the role are encouraged to apply.
Personal Attributes
- Entrepreneurial and self-directed: you thrive in a start-up environment, are energised by building something from the ground up, and are comfortable operating without a well-worn playbook.
- Comfortable with ambiguity: able to make progress and take pragmatic decisions without waiting for perfect information or fully settled processes.
- Organised and systematic: with a genuine interest in building process and institutional knowledge rather than treating it as an afterthought.
- A clear communicator: with the ability to translate technical legal and tax matters for senior stakeholders.
- Comfortable working with autonomy: in a small, lean organisation, taking ownership of a broad and varied remit.
- Sound judgement and discretion: with the confidence to hold a view and the humility to know the limits of your own knowledge.
What We Offer
- A high-ownership role with progression opportunities at the heart of a mission-driven NPO with a global portfolio of cutting-edge research projects.
- Close collaboration with senior leadership and world-class research and clinical partners.
- Competitive salary commensurate with experience, and a performance-related bonus scheme.
- 25 days holiday plus bank holidays.

- Income protection and life assurance.
- The opportunity to contribute to patient-centric research and help shape the future of preventative medicine.
